Yesterday was Spring Cleaning for the boys' rooms. It took me 3+ hours to go through everything and now we have boxes and bags of stuff to get rid of. The play room had been getting worse and worse throughout the weeks. We'd clean up every weekend, but every week the boys would end up bringing out more and more stuff. Then they'd complain every time they had to clean up.
Looking in their closets was a nightmare. Their version of cleaning up meant everything got off the main floor, but mostly got stuffed into any available closet, drawer or shelf space. I really should have taken "before" pictures in each spot I had to clean up. So many papers, rocks, old stickers, broken balloons, pieces of cardboard and old sticks.
Now everything is cleaned out, reorganized and put away again. The shelves, desks and dressers are all clean again and we're ready to start the cycle over again. Usually it takes about 3 months for it to get bad again.
BUT.... now that everything is clean, the boys are playing so nicely together. Building LEGOs (did I mention, I spent a ton of time taking apart all old LEGO creations and resorting the pieces?!), drawing and just having a good time again. That's what makes the cleaning all worth it. It's like a hard reset for them and their brains get uncluttered and creative again.
