Me: Well, you cried the first year when they asked you to wear a headband. You didn't cry but still weren't happy about whatever you wore last year. Maybe this year you'll actually wear it without an issue or even smile.
Peter: Maybe.
It was a success. Peter did smile when he got his trophy. He even wore the fireman hat the entire time he was supposed to. He slid down the fire pole, did all sorts of rolls and cartwheels, swung on the rope and jumped on the trampoline.
Grady was a little 80's punk - complete with headband and wrist bands. The four or five boys did their little dance to Ice, Ice Baby and then went through their circuit doing rolls, walking on the balance beam and doing tricks on the trampoline. Grady said his name clearly, but felt a little nervous.
The boys were both in the first half this year, which means for the second half they got to sit with us and eat their hot dogs. We watched everyone else and stayed until the end. The boys didn't want to leave before that, but they weren't up for the impromptu dance party that happens as the last event of the night.
By the time the boys got home and in bed, it was nearly 10pm and they were still up the next morning by 7ish. Grady was actually up earlier and I tried to get him back in bed. Now that it's over, life should be a little less busy. But the boys also might change around their practice days at gymnastics, so I'm not sure what that'll change into.
Peter's started to ask when he can be on the team, but I still don't think he mentally understands what's involved in that. When we tried two days a week of practice earlier this year, he was not really able to take it because he needed more time at home doing his own thing. We'll probably try again sometime and see how he does, but he wants to think about soccer (if he likes soccer camp next week) and I really need to get the boys some swim lessons still and they might have other things they want to try before they commit to more days of gymnastics.
