Hedgie and Guinea

The boys have been playing the Hedgie and Guinea game almost constantly lately. Grady pretends to be Hedgie and Peter pretends to be Guinea. They talk in squeaky voices and make up all sorts of things. They might also have toys in their hands that Hedgie and Guinea are playing with and now talking for the toys as well.

They've ridden in the car pretending to travel through outer space, they run around the house looking for things that hedgehogs and guinea pigs might enjoy, they even build things for their characters to possibly live in.

Grady built this house for both of them. It has a boat inside so they can float around if they feel like it. There are cups on the side for "just in case someone is in time out". He also had a large piece of sand paper (from a different craft) that he stood up in front of the house when the critters were outside it (have to keep the door closed if no one is home).

In order to explain Peter's craft, I have to start a little further back... When we had Krypto, I read that you could hang a bell really low on the patio door and ring it anytime you go in or out, so the dog can connect the need to go out with the ringing of the bell. I was doing this when I'd take Krypto outside to pee on the grass and he was getting the hang of it a little bit. So Peter made a guinea pig toy, but then decided it would work pretty well as a dog bell for the door - just in case we ever have a dog again. There's a stick or something inside the little box, so it'll rattle if you shake it.

Then the boys continue their pseudo-obsession with Star Trek. They've been drawing the starship Enterprise a lot lately. Somehow Peter was drawing turtle things and drew a turtle enterprise. And that made Grady want one related to hedgehogs, so Peter drew some of a hedgehog Enterprise for Grady, then Grady filled in the details.

Today, when we went to Five Guys, the boys quickly finished their food and asked to use the provided index cards to draw pictures to hang on the cork board there. Obviously, Enterprises were involved. Boris was really impressed with Peter's level of detail and perspective. Also notice the Five Guys inside the Enterprise body and the burger flag on top. And I find it so funny that Grady has to draw exactly the same thing as Peter. He really looks up to him for inspiration and Peter's most of the time very encouraging of Grady's efforts.

Peter's tall enough to reach the supplies at Five Guys, but Grady is about 2 inches too short. When it was time to put the crayons away, the boys each took a handful but Grady got upset that Peter had more. Sure enough, Grady can't reach to put the crayons back anyway, but instead of just handing them to Peter, Grady reaches as high up the side of the basket as he can then lets the crayon drop to the floor. Peter laughs, picks up the crayon and puts it inside the basket. I thought after the first time, it wouldn't be amusing, but they just kept doing it that way. I think they were back in their Hedgie and Guinea personas and it was part of the game. Eventually Grady started throwing the crayons up one at a time to get into the basket and Peter would cheer in his squeaky voice each time the crayon made it.
