Ending the Summer with a Bang

It's been a busy time around here. Getting back from vacation, the boys ask almost every day "when are we going to play with <x person>?". Anyone, basically. They don't really care as long as something is scheduled for them to play with a friend. We get home from a friend's house, and they immediately ask when they'll get to play with them again. Like I just magically have it all taken care of for everyday play.

The boys have done camp at Tumbleweeds about twice a week when we're in town. It gives me a chance to get things done, but also makes sure they're being active and not sitting at home with the TV or the iPad all day. They're both getting a bit tired of it. There was some game played last week where Grady got a rug burn and now he's adamantly not wanting to go. But he's still made it, still had fun when he's there.

Peter has been asking since school got out, when can he have a sleepover. With only two more weekends until school starts, we got one planned for last weekend. Trying to manage the excitement meant that I planned it for the same day I told him about it. He heard about it and started packing up right away: a sleeping bag and a duffle bag filled with books, toys, stuffed animals, and his toothbrush.

I wasn't sure how well he'd survive it; I turned off my phone's nighttime Do Not Disturb setting just in case he needed to come home. But...no phone calls. He made it ok even though he came home saying he couldn't really sleep well there. He told me he fell asleep after midnight and woke up around 5am. He was on the cranky side the next day, and he slept a solid 12 hours that night.

Grady, on the other hand, was not ready for the idea of a sleepover. I thought he would feel a little left out that he was staying home, but he didn't mention it at all. He probably missed Peter, but he would not have wanted the sleepover either.

Instead, Grady lost a tooth that night. It was quite shocking. The tooth had been loose for a couple days and it seemed like he'd accidentally whack it everyday. But when Peter's first tooth was loose (and all subsequent teeth), they took ages to fall out and he would be so cranky for days, freaking out about the tooth coming out. Anyway, Grady went to brush his teeth that night and said it was bothering him or something, so he just pulled it out. Such a clean, teeny tooth.

Grady was very excited about the tooth fairy visiting. He got a Star Wars car shooter thing, that he was so jealous of when Peter got one for one of his teeth. He's finally big enough that he was able to work it and it lasted as the most fun ever...for about 1/2 a day.

Now we have a slightly toothless Grady. He looks so different with the missing tooth. Like he's not a little kid anymore. His face is still little, but that gap says he's getting ready to be a big kid. And just in time for Kindergarten too.

And a funny hair day. I find it so amusing that Peter goes for the punk look with his baseball cap way back on his head (so lots of hair is showing), and Grady's more interested in having a faux-hawk whenever he can.
